Alwin “Fritz” Welling, age 88, of Millbury, OH, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Otterbein Portage Valley Retirement Village, Pemberville, OH.
He was born on October 25, 1924 in Millbury on the homestead to Arthur and Ilah (Berndt) Welling. In 1942 he graduated from Lake High School. On April 13, 1957 he married Marian Dunn in Milton Center, OH, and they lived on the family farm that Fritz’s grandfather purchased in 1901.
He was a lifelong farmer and owned his own radio and TV repair shop.
His memberships included: life member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stony Ridge, OH, Farm Bureau Council for 54 years, served as trustee for eight years and Golden Seaway Farm Council since its beginning in 1958. Fritz was instrumental in changing the grading at railroad crossings in Lake Township by working with the Lake Township Trustees and Wood County Commissioners. The crossings were graded so farm machinery could cross over more easily. He also served as a County Commissioner in the clean out of the North Branch of the Portage River in Wood County.
